Why Do We Need Money?
It's necessary to live and
eat, to be able to get around, and to have access to electricity, but whether
you live off the grid, you must first have the financial means to pay for it.
I know you need a saw or an axe to cut down a tree or build a building, and you need money to purchase the saw and the axe.
Money, I believe, plays a role, whether good or bad.
I understand that you can live off the grid, but you'll need fruit trees, a vegetable garden, and some kind of protein to get started, and sadly, all of that will cost money.
I understand that you could possibly eat berries and fruit from the land that is already there, but it cost money to bring it there, and we will need solar panels, which is awesome, but all of this costs money, and batteries to power the solar panels cost money. I mean, unless you're only eating wild berries, catching fish in the stream, and living in a shack that you put together without the use of any resources that you had to purchase, I'm sure. I know you're short on cash!! I believe it makes you happier in the material sense, but not in the emotional sense; it is not a cure-all for happiness, but it does allow you to have things that make you happy.
And unless you have the land to grow your own food and raise your own animals (sheep for their wool so you can spin, weave, and make clothes out of it), you'll be cold, starving, and likely dead in no time.
We live in an advanced society where even the most basic of subsidies require capital. That's not the same as asking if "we as a society should grow to the point where all wealth is shared in common and all people's needs are met by society."
The two scenarios I use
are diametrically opposed in every way. You should do the former if you don't
want to be a part of society.
If you believe we should do the above, you will most likely have to wait a long time. I don't think we'll get to that point for a long time, if ever.
Humans are plagued by avarice and greed. Many of us can't be trusted not to do bad things. We clearly are not at a point in our macroevolution where we are ready for a society in which all wealth is shared, no one takes advantage of others, and everybody can be relied on to contribute to the smooth operation of society's wheels. Not only do we need and have resources, but we also need and have police.
However, even our police force is beset with issues... rogue cops who are high in power, or who steal from evidence lockers, or who do not apply the law fairly.
ALL OF THESE ARE REASONS WHY WE ARE STILL IN NEED OF Capital.
Our money is spent on
taxes that fund our societal structures, but the bulk of it is spent on our own
and our families' needs.
Perhaps you've wondered why certain people appear to want much more money than they actually need. That's a different topic entirely, maybe better posed to a member of the priesthood!
